About Canada Visit Visa

Canada Visit Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an official document issued by a Canadian Visa Office. It is affixed to your passport and serves as proof that you meet the requirements to enter Canada as a temporary resident, whether for tourism, study, or work purposes.

In Canada, there are two types of Visitor Visas available:

  1. Single Entry Visa: Single entry visas allow temporary stays for up to 6 months.
  2. Multiple-Entry Visa: Multiple-entry visitor visas permit entry into Canada multiple times and are typically valid for up to 10 years or until one month before the passport or re-entry visa expires, whichever comes first.

Canada Visitor Visa FAQs

How long can I stay in Canada as a visitor?
In most cases, visitors to Canada can remain in the country for up to six months from the day they enter (or until their passport expires, whichever comes first). The specific date by which a visitor must leave Canada will be indicated by a stamp in their passport and/or a document provided to them by a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer. Visitors who wish to remain in Canada beyond their initially authorized stay can apply for an extension.

Do I need a medical exam to get a visitor visa?
In most cases, visitors in Canada for six months or less do not require a medical exam unless they will be working in a job where the “protection of public health is essential.” The same public health protection condition applies to visitors who will be in Canada for longer than six months. Additionally, visitors in Canada for six months or longer will need a medical exam if they meet either of the following requirements:

  1. The applicant has been living or residing in a designated country or territory for six or more consecutive months.
  2. The applicant is applying for a Parent and Grandparent Super Visa.

This requirement applies to all visitors, including those from visa-exempt countries, who have been in any of the designated countries within a year immediately preceding the date they seek entry into Canada.

I got a new passport but I have a valid visa in my old one. Can I use the visa in my old passport?
IRCC states that it is possible to travel to Canada using a valid visitor visa in an old passport. However, travelers in this situation must bring both of the following documents with them to Canada:

  • The old passport with the valid visa.
  • The new, valid passport or travel document.
  • Travelers may need to explain to CBSA officers why their old passport is no longer valid.

Note: To avoid processing delays at the Canadian border, IRCC recommends that all visitors to Canada obtain a new visitor visa in their new, valid passport.

Can I file an appeal if my visitor visa is denied?
There is no appeal process for a visitor visa application with IRCC. If an applicant is denied a visitor visa to enter Canada, they may re-apply. However, IRCC recommends re-applying only if there has been a change in their situation or if they have new information that may influence the outcome of their application.
